Frequently Asked Questions
If you purchased an animal from a local farmer, you will pay them for the animal, and AW Meat House for the processing of that animal. If you elect to purchase an animal direct from AW Meat House, then the animal and processing will be combined.
Beef- On average 10-14 days after it enters our facility.
Pork- On average 1 week after it enters our facility.
Factors such as genetics, age, and diet will contribute to how much meat is in an animal. As a general rule of thumb, a grain finished 24 month old angus steer will usually have a hanging weight ~65% of its live weight. The final take home meat after removing trim, excess fat, bones, etc will be approximately 40% of the live weight.
A 1200 lb live weight steer would have a hanging weight of approximately 780 lbs, while the “take home” of that animal would be approximately 480 lbs.
See FAQ “What can I expect to receive if I order a quarter beef?” if you want to know a general idea of what you will receive.
On average:
50lb ground beef, 3 NY strips, 3 ribeyes, 2 filet mignon steaks, 2 sirloin steaks, 3 round steaks, 3 chuck roasts, 1 rump roast, 1 arm roast, 1 English roast, 1 sirloin tip roast, 3 soup bones, 3 beef liver.
Remember, you can always substitute. For example, you can tell us you prefer cube steak over round steak.
At this time, we are not able to ship products. However, keep checking back because we hope to make this available in the future!
All whole muscle cuts (steaks, roasts, cube steak, etc) are vacuum packaged.
Ground beef will be packaged in plastic “chubs”.
There are multiple options available for how you have your animal cut/packaged. Start with these two questions: what sorts of meals do you enjoy, and how many people will usually be joining you.
The steaks are easy! Tell us if you do not like bone–resulting in ribeyes, NY strip, filet mignon, and sirloin steaks. If you do prefer bone-in steaks we will be happy to pass along t-bone and porterhouse steaks.
Still not sure–or want to try something new? Our staff will be happy to discuss cut/packing preferences in detail before making that final decision.
